what is a nut?
A nut is a hard-shelled dried fruit or seed with a separable shell or rind on the outside, and a kernel on the inside.
However, the word ‘nut’ can also be used for other things. For example, a ‘nut’ could mean some who is enthusiastic about something; a film nut; a football nut; an exercise nut.
When someone is a bit of ‘a nut’ it can mean that they are eccentric or foolish and sometimes referred to as ‘nutty’. It is also used negatively about someone who is not mentally sound or well – He is nuts; he is a nutter; he is a nut-job.
‘Use your nut’ is a reference to your head – to think – and a ‘nut’ is a metal object that is often used with a screw. See below.
When someone says that something is ‘nuts’, they means it is crazy or nonsense. For example, an exciting roller-coaster ride can be nuts; intense sport event would be nuts; and to hear a story about pigs flying is nuts. However, ‘nuts’ also refers to a males testis – therefore a man has two nuts. In football (or soccer), when a player kicks the ball between the legs of another player, it is called a nut meg, and the player might say, ‘nuts’. However, to say something is ‘the nuts’ means that it very good.
‘A hard nut to crack’ is a difficult problem or person – “getting her to change her mind is a hard nut to crack” – often someone who is stubborn.
When summarizing something, we can use ‘In a nutshell’. For example when describing a sports match, we might say, “in a nutshell, they lost the match.”
The last expression is an idiom – “if you pay peanuts you get monkeys” – which means that if you pay poorly for something, the workmanship can also be of a low quality.
